Differences between Magpul and Magpul PTS, October 16, 2011 - By C. Rohner-
I have the original Magpul sights on my AR15 and I LOVE them.I ordered these Magpul PTS sights to go on a Ruger 1022 that I have equipped with tactical rails.I did a little research on the web before purchasing these and learned that the primary difference between the original and the PTS is that they are made with a different, lower-quality polymer.This alone was not be a big problem for me considering the gun they would be used on.At the lower PTS price I figured, how could the sights be THAT much different from the original Magpul sights?Well, they are VERY different and in my opinion, unusable for anything other than a toy gun.They ARE made with a lower quality polymer that is easy to see in comparison with the original, but again, this is minor.The BIG problem is the engineering tolerances and the quality control.I put the sights on my rail, tightened them down, and put them in the collapsed position only to find that while one sight lies close to parallel with the rail, the other sight points off the rail at nearly a 15 degree angle.Closer examination proved that the rail grooves on one sight weren't the same as the other.Besides the fact that this looks retarded, the BIG problem is-- good luck trying to hit anything with these sites.You will get two different sights from the ones I received but what can you count on?They could be better or they could be worse.Engaging the sights into the upright position works but there is a little bit of play in the buttons.Enough play that sometimes the only way to get it to spring up is to press both sides of the button at the same time.This never happens on an original Magpul.Once engaged in the upright position, the dual aperture window ALWAYS flips down.This is caused by the momentum of the spring action when the sight pops up.I guess its not that big a deal, you just have to fold the aperture window back up after EVERY time you engage the sight upright.Again, this NEVER happens on the original Magpul.Once the aperture window is corrected and the sights are upright, they seem to hold VERY still and stiff.I give the product 3 stars because I realize that I bought an airsoft recommended product and tried to put it on a 22LR.Nonetheless, I would still consider some of these problems to be bad, even for airsoft.
